Marijn van den Berg had two previous wins in his career but this stage 5 victory at the
Tour de Pologne is probably his biggest to date. Speaking afterwards, the
EF Education-EasyPost rider could barely hide his delight.
"It's always good to win, but this victory is special," said the 24-year-old Dutchman who had finished second on the prior day's stage 4. "Yesterday I was already very good, but today I knew that everything would go well, I would definitely have a chance. If it got tough, the real sprinters wouldn't be there anymore. That would increase my chances, so this was a perfect situation."
The quality in the field at the Tour de Pologne is incredibly high as shown when looking at the names van den Berg edged out for the win,
Matej Mohoric and Joao Almeida.
"I work really hard, have had a good training camp and wasn't even supposed to ride here," the Dutchman explains, referencing a late bout of illness within the EF Education-EasyPost set up that saw him drafted in. "I was supposed to ride in Denmark, but a rider was sick, so I had to come here."
