As Warren Barguil continues his search for a Giro d'Italia stage win that would complete his set of Grand Tour victories, the Team Arkea-Samsic rider revealed he is "still missing a little something to win."
"I had to make a big effort to get into the breakaway group. It obviously cost me energy," the former Tour de France King of the Mountains winner said in his post-stage interview with Eurosport. "Carlos Verona and I were riding hard to try to catch up with the leading man, to win this stage, not for a place of honour. So there is frustration. In the final, I get into the descent but a little late. My legs are not top yet, but I hope it will come. The strongest won today."
When Ben Healy made his stage-winning attack to ride solo with 50km to go, Barguil wasn't able to follow and the although he did recover well and finish 4th, the 31-year-old laments a chance that has come and gone. "Even if it's another missed opportunity, being in front is always a good thing, especially after the difficult weeks I've been through," he says.
"I hope that one day I can take advantage of my top form to materialize, because until now, every time I miss a little something to race for the win," he continues before revealing he has no intention of riding for the GC despite the fact he now sits in the top 20 overall. "It is not at all important for me, I absolutely do not look at the general classification, my only objective is a stage victory."
