Simon Yates is one of the few GC riders on the market for 2025. However his current team Jayco AlUla would prefer to keep the 2018 Vuelta a Espana winner on-board for few more seasons. But the rider himself has to decide whether he wishes to bind his future with the Australian formation after having spent 10 years in the team.
And the clock is ticking for Simon Yates to make a final decision as the teams needs to move forward in their planning for years to come. "If it’s our choice then it’s between 10 days to two weeks because we have to make decisions as well," the Jayco AlUla boss Brent Coppeland tells GCN about the deadline.
"He would like to talk about the sporting aspect of what’s expected of him and what’s expected of us, which is a discussion that’s ongoing at the moment. It’s about race programmes, where he’d like to have his ambitions and goals, and support riders," he adds.
Apparently an extension through 2026 would then be in the play. "I think it would be a two-year deal. That’s what we’ve discussed but we’re still needing to talk about the sporting aspects, and that was his request. He’s very relaxed about these things but we can’t wait too long. We have to be sure of what’s happening. There’s not many GC riders on the market," Coppeland points out.
