Those U23 riders who already race in ProTeams or WorldTour teams won't be allowed to race at the U23 Championships (World, European and National alike) anymore next year. The news was brought around by French website DirectVélo.
Alec Segaert convincingly rode to his third European time trial title among the U23s on Wednesday. Afterwards it turned out that the Lotto Dstny rider was not only the fastest in his age category, the elite riders could not match Segaert's time either.
According to DirectVelo, we (most likely) won't see that repeat again in the future. Riders who compete in the ProTour or WorldTour will now ride the National, European and World championships with the elite riders and no longer in the promising category. This rule does not apply to riders who are active at the continental level.
This year, only the age of a rider determines in which category he or she may participate. However, if a promising rider has competed once among the elite riders at a championship, it is no longer possible to return to the promising category in later editions. This rule was accepted in response to Yevgeniy Fedorov's controversial surge to win the U23 world title in Wollongong 2022, having previously started in time trial with the elite category at the same championship.
