Remco Evenepoel has won the Clasica San Sebastian in impressive fashion, as Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team set up an attack which the Belgian completed with an incredible display of power to take his second win in the Basque classic.
Martijn Tusveld and Casper Pedersen (Team DSM), Manuele Boaro (Astana Qazaqstan Team), Théo Delacroix (Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux) Ibai Azurmendi (Euskaltel - Euskadi), Óscar Cabedo (Burgos-BH), Alan Jousseaume (TotalEnergies), Jon Barrenetxea (Caja Rural - Seguros RGA) and Eugenio Sánchez (Equipo Kern Pharma) marked the day's breakaway, in an attempt to survive until late.
Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl set the pace up the Jaizkibel, catching up with the breakaway. The race was not aggressive, as the riders just attempted to position into the ascent to Erlaitz, where the race blew up with a race-deciding move from Remco Evenepoel which came near the base after EF Education-EasyPost tried to surprise.
Simon Yates briefly followed the attack, but Evenepoel went solo with 44 kilometers to go. The Belgian would never again be caught, or seen as he extended the gap very quickly, and then expanded it in the final 30 meters of racing despite rolling alone in the lead of the race. Evenepoel rode into San Sebastián with a large and comfortable lead, celebrating his second triumph in the Spanish classic.
Pavel Sivakov and Carlos Rodríguez were the closest chasers after the ascent to Erlaitz, with a group behind containing Yates, Tiesj Benoot and Bauke Mollema, with small groups forming behind. In the Alto de Murgil Pavel Sivakov dropped his teammate and rode into second place, whilst Bauke Mollema caught up with Carlos Rodríguez, with Tiesj Benoot dropping both.. Sivakov rode to second place, with Benoot completing the podium.
