Remco Evenepoel: “Last Sunday we saw a Flying Dutchman, hopefully we will see a Flying Belgian on Friday”

Remco Evenepoel's run as the road race World Champion came to an end last Sunday as Mathieu van der Poel secured the win in Glasgow. On Friday however, the Belgian gets another chance in the individual time-trial.

“The podium with two seems nice to me. As long as it is only one of us who is on the highest scaffold," Evenepoel told Sporza referencing his Belgium teammate and fellow pre-race favourite, Wout van Aert. “Of course I already had a local lap to get loose. It is a nice circuit where I can use my aerodynamics in the first part, which goes straight for a long time.”

After losing the Rainbow Jersey on Sunday, Evenepoel is extra motivated to regain the World Championship-winning bands this Friday against the clock. “Last Sunday we saw a Flying Dutchman, hopefully we will see a Flying Belgian on Friday," he declares defiantly.

The aforementioned van Aert meanwhile, predicts big things from his compatriot but reiterates the fact he won't be the only contender. “It's hard to say. Remco of course, but Ganna and Küng are also contenders who are ready for it,” says van Aert. “The arrival at the castle is very nice, I also like the cobblestones in the castle. Only there could be a few more corners, because I digest those speed differences better.”
