It's a great day to tick off at the #Giro as @GeraintThomas86, @taogeoghegan and the team cross the line safely on stage 10 ☑️ A cold and tricky day out in the rain, the break stayed clear but the GC contenders all finish together in Viareggio.
His first in pink at the 2023 Giro d'Italia wasn't exactly a day for Geraint Thomas to show off his Maglia Rosa. Disgusting weather conditions meant that for the majority of the day, the Welshman was covered in a black raincoat.
“It was not the best conditions to wear the pink jersey, haha," the INEOS Grenadiers leader laughed in a post-stage interview. Despite the cold, wet, slippery day in the peloton, the fact Thomas was wearing the Maglia Rosa if only underneath many layers means there was still plenty to smile about. "But it was a beautiful day.”
Thomas has maintained his lead of the Giro d'Italia by just two seconds from Jumbo-Visma leader Primoz Roglic after a day where the main general classification riders remained safely in the peloton. “A solid day, I must say. It was extremely cold and the descent was quite dangerous," Thomas recaps. "A lot has happened, but I am happy to get through this day well.”
After admitting his disbelief when he first heard of Remco Evenepoel's departure due to a positive covid test, Thomas is under no illusions about how important wearing the Maglia Rosa is. “I don't take this jersey for granted,” Thomas concludes. “Day by day we will now defend him. A lot can happen, especially in this weather.”
