Oier Lazkano gains more recognition at the Classics: "When he attacked, Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel responded immediately"

The fans of cobbled classics had to learn the name Oier Lazkano last year. Coming to the pro ranks through traditional Caja Rural, who would've thought the tall Spaniard would be the next big thing in the cold Belgian races. Movistar's sports director Jürgen Roelandts, who is in charge of racing in his homeland, now spoke to WielerFlits about the current Spanish champion.

What will be different for Lazkano compared to last year's Dwars Door Vlaanderen? "They didn't know him that well last year. He was then able to finish second in Dwars door Vlaanderen from the breakaway. With the big engine he has, that was ideal. Now they're not going to let him escape so easily anymore."

"He is a type who is made for the classics. What was also nice: when he attacked at the Stationsberg, Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel decided to respond immediately. They don't just let him ride away anymore, and that says something. Only tactically he can still improve somewhat in these types of races, but we are working on that. I know my way around here well, that will help too."

"If the situation arises, he will certainly be able to win at some point, even if with Mathieu, Wout and Tadej around it won't be easy. His great strength is that he never really stands still. Whether it is 250 kilometers or 180, I think it is still top and does not lose much of its strength."
