The best Dutch riders will compete for the red-white-blue tricolor on a local circuit built around the Posbank climb. What seemed to be a pictorqesue race in middle of nature, might not exactly go as planned for the organisers however. However Omroep Gelderland reports that Natuurmonumenten is concerned about the event and is now rebelling against the passage over the Posbank, which is a key part of a 14-kilometer circuit.
The report states that they don't like an event with 'bells, whistles, helicopters, running and screaming audiences'. Although the climb itself is public, the immediately adjacent nature is part of the Veluwezoom National Park. "Our property starts right next to the asphalt," reports a manager. "Permission is required for matters for which the asphalt alone is not sufficient."
The National Championships can continue, but the passage over the Posbank must meet very strict requirements. Helicopters, drones, sound systems and advertising will not be allowed in the climbing area. Support cars and other team cars are also not allowed on the col. People will also not be welcome, so the passage through the nature reserve must be completed without the public along the sides.
Thijs Rondhuis of the organizing party thinks the event can continue as normal. "We are aware that the race will pass through a very vulnerable area and are prepared to make this National Championship as sustainable as possible. The KNWU attaches great importance to nature and the future of the Netherlands. A committee has been convened to discuss the requirements and will meet on Wednesday."
