Maxim Van Gils 'only' 20th at Amstel Gold Race: "I didn't think it would be the decisive move, but in the end it was"

Maxim Van Gils has been riding around in great form since January and thus he was seen as one of outsiders for today's Amstel Gold Race. However things didn't turn out well for the Lotto Dstny rider who got stuck in the main bunch and crossed the line in 20th at the end of the day.

What seemed like anticipation move by couple second-row favourites eventually turned out to be a decisive one, when Tom Pidcock joined the party. Meanwhile main star Mathieu van der Poel was only ghost of his last week's self, waiting for a miracle in the main bunch with riders who missed this move such as Van Gils.

"It was a different edition today, as we were still there with quite a big group. Today the puzzle pieces didn't fall in the right place. When they jumped I didn't think it would be the decisive move, but in the end it was, and we didn't have anyone in," Van Gils analyzes in team press release.

He continues: "I felt good, but it wasn't our race sadly. We had high expectations for today, but we will now look motivated to the next two races."
