Lennert Van Eetvelt will be back in action this week in the Alpes Isère Tour (May 24-28) on behalf of
Lotto Dstny. After a difficult period in which he was placed on non-active for using a nasal spray, he's looking to pick up where he left off in spring, finishing twice on podium in Mallorca or 15th in GC of Vuelta a Catalunya. In an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws, he looks back again.
“The French doping authority AFLD asked questions about a substance found in my body. There are four categories: substances that are not allowed, substances that are allowed with permission, substances that are only allowed in certain products, and substances that are always allowed. The substance that was in my body belongs to the third category,” explains Van Eetvelt.
“Although I reported after the doping test in question that I use a nasal spray containing this substance, AFLD had questions. It cannot be the dose, because the amount was minimal and perfectly explained by the use of the nasal spray. I stand firm and still don't understand what the problem was, but fear it could happen in the future, so I won't be using that nasal spray again.”
Van Eetvelt was soon cleared, but does the 21-year-old rider now suffer from reputation damage? “The responses I received were mild. I got a lot of support, but I didn't check social media and rushed to Tenerife to escape the fuss and do an altitude training internship at the same time. Although I haven't been able to race for a month, my level must be good. I am keen on a good performance in the Alpes Isère Tour.”
