Lennard Kämna was one of the outsiders for the victory in the opening time trial of the Giro d'Italia, but ultimately came no further than 22nd place. The German lost one minute and 23 seconds to stage winner Remco Evenepoel.
According to Jens Zemke, sports director at BORA-hansgrohe, Kämna has been a bit sick in recent days. “He has not completed the entire training program. He stayed in the hotel yesterday,” Zemke told Der Spiegel after the time trial.
Kämna himself also spoke to the Duitse weekblad. "It wasn't a highlight by any means, but it wasn't bad either," the 26-year-old said of his time trial. “Decent, I would say. It was tough and very straight. You didn't have a moment to catch your breath."
Speaking to the DPA news agency, Kämna added that he is still confident. “This was only the first stage and it was not a catastrophe. It's okay."
