Jumbo-Visma DS shares story on Jonas Vingegaard not shaving his legs: "He just doesn't care much about etiquette in the peloton"

An entertaining story in the 2023 season was Primoz Roglic's comeback to racing in March with fully unshaven legs, and how he wouldn't shave them until he won a race - which happened in the matter of days. However, the Slovenian wasn't the only leader of Jumbo-Visma not following this amusing unspoken rule of cycling as Jonas Vingegaard was not too different.

"It doesn't matter to him that when he wears the yellow jersey, his socks are now gray and no longer white after three weeks. He also wears Birkenstocks. He is himself when he is the center of attention," Grischa Niermann, DS of the Dutch team, said in an interview with Wielerrevue regarding Jonas Vingegaard. "He is very relaxed, yes, sometimes a bit absent-minded." The Danish climber is known to be a more closed person in comparison to his main rival Tadej Pogacar, but on the road that ultimately does not favour neither of them.

Niermann also reveals that from time to time, Vingegaard also goes a long time without shaving his legs. An amusing part of being a pro cyclist as it is one of the most known signs of a "serious" rider. The likes of Roglic and Peter Sagan in the past have purposefully gone against the grain and gathered some attention and jokes for not doing it. The Tour de France champion is not too different: "I always insist that he shaves his legs in time. For a training camp, for example."

"Both in the spring and just before the Tour he had at least an inch of hair on his legs. But I laugh with him. He just doesn't care much about etiquette in the peloton," he laughs. "I actually don't think it's possible and I'll report it as soon as the race comes up. But that's how he is, very relaxed."
