Wout van Aert has been involved in the action on almost all of the first 9 stages of the 2023 Tour de France. According to Danish national champion, Mattias Skjelmose though, that could be about to end.
Prior to the start of the Tour de France, van Aert revealed that if his heavily pregnant wife was to go into labour, the call would be made and he would withdraw from the race to be with his family. Lidl-Trek rider Skjelmose has revealed to Danish TV in a pre-stage interview before stage 10, that there are whispers in the peloton van Aert could soon be on his way.
"I've heard rumours that he's going home tomorrow," the 22-year-old who recently won the Tour de Suisse told TV2 prior to the racing getting underway on stage 10. "So that's why I think Jumbo-Visma will try for a break (with Van Aert) today," he speculates.

When quizzed about the rumours, Jumbo-Visma press officer, Ard Bierens was remaining tight-lipped. "There's no point in that at all. It's the first I've heard of it, anyway, so it's definitely not the plan."
