"It was the weirdest stage I've ever done" - Tom Pidcock thinking about yellow jersey in Bologna

Tom Pidcock has previously declared that he won't aim for GC during this year's Tour de France, but that doesn't stop the 24-year-old Brit from testing to see how far he can go with the best in the first week. The opening stage didn't see much action, which was ideal for Pidcock, who can now set his sights on possibility of taking yellow on the second day in Italy.

"It was the weirdest stage I've ever done I think," Pidcock shares his first impressions in a quick interview for his team after the stage. "It was the first proper hot day in Europe for everybody, I don't think anyone has raced in the heat yet this year. No team really wanted to take it up. The breakaway staying away in the opening stage of Tour de France - that's not something that happened in a long time."

Just like all other GC contenders, Pidcock got through the day safely in the peloton, crossing the line just outside the top 10. "I'm actually really happy that I got through the day in the front today and we're ready to fight again tomorrow where there are more opportunities," he looks forward to the punchy day with finish in Bologna.
