Fenix-Deceuninck rider
Sanne Cant was one of the many riders forced to abandon
Paris-Roubaix Femmes after a crash. In Cant's case however, the crash genuinely was horrific but thankfully she is already back on her bike.
“I spent fourteen days at home with a little more bandage around my head than planned,” the 32-year-old Belgian tells Sporza. "That's part of racing, I think. I have been extremely lucky. For the same money, it was done with cycling for the rest of my life."
A former podium finisher at the Belgian national road race championship, Cant was the main victim of the crash that wiped out a group of pre-race favourites and was immediately rushed to a hospital in Lille for treatment of wounds on her head, her forehead and eye.
“I didn't really have any pain. But when I look in the mirror, I keep hoping it will all go away. At the moment I'm pulling myself up to the fact that it could be a lot worse," she explains. "The plastic surgeon placed the stitches carefully and close together, so luckily it wasn't that bad. So in that respect, I don't mind doing nothing for two weeks. I am happy and relieved that my career is not over and I can show myself again next year in Roubaix. I drove around with a super good feeling that day and was also among the top favourites. I also showed that Roubaix suits me well.”
