One of the breakout stars of the 2023 spring Classics campaign, Ben Healy continued to show impressive form at Liege-Bastogne-Liege, riding to a fourth-placed finish.
“I didn’t quite have the legs to drop everyone on that last climb," the 22-year-old Irishman revealed in a post-race interview. "Maybe in the final sprint I jumped a bit too early because I sensed a bit of hesitation, and maybe they would be looking at each other. I gave it a go."
The EF Education-EasyPost rider has already impressed this spring with a runner-up finish at Brabantse Pijl behind Dorian Godon and second behind Tadej Pogacar at the Amstel Gold Race, Healy narrowly missed out on another podium, being beaten in a sprint for second and third by Tom Pidcock and Santiago Buitrago although the eventual race winner Remco Evenepoel was way out of sight.
"It would be nice to say maybe I could come to compete for the win in races like this in the future," Healy continues. "If you told me that two weeks ago, I would have put my hand up for it.”
