The relations between
Emanuel Buchmann and
BORA - hansgrohe are not very good at the moment. After the German champion was crossed out of the
Giro d'Italia lineup at very late phases, the 31-year-old's future continuation with the German formation doesn't seem quite likey.
For
Jens Voigt the situation is pretty clear: "To me it seems like a quiet farewell or like a clear sign: We'll keep you, but for significantly less money," the expert told Eurosport.
"I can't actually imagine Bora and Buchmann having a future together. Only if he doesn't get an offer anywhere else could he bite the bullet so as not to have to end his career - because places in the WorldTour are also rare," the 52-year-old analyzes the situation.
"For me the question is also: Where can he now use the good form that he has built up for the Giro? Should he now be sent to some small race in Eastern Europe instead? But there aren't many races at the same time as the Giro," Voigt sees another problem.
For Buchmann, who does not yet appear to be part of Bora's Tour squad, Voigt now recommends brilliant sporting feats as the ideal reaction: "For Emu, the best answer would be to win two stages at the Dauphiné or the Tour de Suisse in June and... to become German champion for the third time to show his class."
Slowly there seems to be a bigger picture emerging from cycling.
Investment and salaries in particular made a big jump at some point with many who couldn’t really afford it long-term jumping on the bandwagon.
Now we have entered a period of consolidation and investment is no longer growing, budgets are under more pressure, salaries are the largest and easiest target.
When you consider the number of talented hungry riders lining up for a spot at this level, it makes little financial sense to keep on well-paid staff that can be replaced by cheaper novices.
Perhaps this stress is also being felt in the peleton now with each rider feeling he has to perform to prove his place and this has made racing more dangerous and risky?
Wonder why Bora makes promises they can't keep? That's a crime!
Were you there when A spoke to B or are you just taking one side’s word for what he understood without considering what the other side meant in the context?
Are you going to sue your parents about Xmas or the Easter bunny or God or for making you believe you were the best?
Actually, when you make a promises you cannot keep, is like stabbing that person in the back with a dagger or something...
