The 2023 Glasgow World Championships were the first of self-styled 'Super' World Championships and were incredibly successful in terms of on-bike drama. Documents have now revealed however, that the event went overbudget by £8 million.
The Scottish government had initially set out £30 million for the event in Glasgow that saw road cycling, track cycling and many more disciplines come together for the first time. Due to the immense preparation needed to hold all the World Championships simultaneously though, that aforementioned £30 million was not adequate.
This vast overspend has drawn some heavy criticism back home in Scotland. “The message from the Scottish Government appears to be that it values a one-off cycling event over the viability of our ailing arts and culture sector," lamented newspaper The Scotsman revealing that Scotland's arts and culture budget will be cut by £6.6 million.
In government, Scotland's culture minister, Angus Robertson claimed that inflation was the main cause for the overspend on the budget and it in turn is unrelated to the cutting of the nation's overall arts and culture budget.
