The second stage of the Vuelta a Burgos saw a high-speed crash due to a speed bump in the final kilometers. Many riders have called out UCI for the incident.
Edoardo Affini blamed UCI for approving the route in the second stage of the Vuelta a Burgos. "Dear UCI, after everything that has already happened, you allow a finish with a speed bump so deep in the last 800 meters while we come from a super fast section. It is a disgrace. Unacceptable," Affini wrote on his Twitter account. His teammate Dekker was the primary victim. He failed to see the speed bump and lost control, taking a large part of the peloton with him.
Affini was among the leading riders and finished second behind his teammate Timo Roosen. Some people criticized him for cheering at the finish line after such a massive crash, to which he defended himself, saying, "Before everyone starts writing nonsense, I want to make something clear. I did a full lead-out. A teammate passed me 200 metres from the finish, and I cheered,"
He says he had no idea about the crash and hopes no one was seriously injured. "I really had no idea about the big carnage behind us. I am very sorry and sympathize with everyone who was involved in the crash. I hope no one was seriously injured," concluded Affini.
