Domenico Pozzovivo is starting his 2023 season! After many months of search he recently found a team and signed with Israel - Premier Tech, and today he makes his first outing with the team at the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali.
The five-day stage-race in Italy will be a perfect start for the 40-year old. As he begins his 19th season in the peloton he leads the Israeli team with four opportunities to take stage wins in a very hilly race. Last year he's finished third at the Giro dell'Emilia and Top10 at the Giro d'Italia and Tour de Suisse, so among a modest field he could be in the fight for the overall win.
“I am ready to compete for the general classification, the veteran said in a press release. "I am hopeful that a top-ten finish is a realistic goal. I don't shy away from that. I'm very competitive, and what's the point of racing if you don't challenge yourself? I feel emotional, I'm looking forward to it like it's one of the biggest games of the season. And in a way it is. After all, I don't think I've ever waited so long to be able to race again."
His last-minute transfer came as a pleasant surprise. He hoped to start Tirreno-Adriatico, but his first outing will be here, but he admits happiness over a return to competition: “I didn't really have time to celebrate. I immediately started focusing on how I could be in the best possible shape and race-ready at the start of my first race;" he concluded.
