Caleb Ewan went to the Australian National Championships road race with the goal to win it and achieve the Australian Road Race title. The 28 year old sprinter from Sidney finished in 18th place 5, 05:02 minutes behind Lucas Plapp who re-validated his title for the second consecutive time.
"And yet I can be satisfied with my form. I regret that last lap, but at the same time I can be satisfied with my form. I am full of confidence for the Tour Down Under", Ewan told in good mood afterwards in a post race conference.
The course was not easy, with a 16 lap that covered Mount Buninyong climb, a 3.0 Km climb with an average slope around 5.2% in a 185km race. So the course suited a combative way of racing with a lot of attacks that eventually happened and Ewan only had 2 teammates to help him catching those attacks.
"It's a tricky course that doesn't quite suit me. I had that good day, but the pace was also very high. Lap after lap, riders were dropped until we were left with about 20 riders going into the last lap together. I knew I was the fastest in that group, but on the last climb the attacks started. Those were too much, and I had to let the group go unfortunately", concluded Ewan about his performance at the Australian Nationals.
