Biniam Girmay had entered the
Tour de France under the radar. After a massive breakthrough in 2022, the
Intermarché - Wanty rider has managed to stabilize his career and after making his Tour de France debut last year, this time around he won the first bunch sprint of the race. The Eritrean is definitely open to aim for more victorious throughout this Tour.
“Winning again? Of course. If you win one, then you want to win another," Girmay told SpazioCiclismo in a pre-race interview. "The form is there and the morale is high. So, why not think about winning again today? We have several options and this can allow us to race aggressively. In addition, one can be there in the final if the other is not well and each of us can work for the other when we need to find the space for the sprint”.
He refers to the Belgian team's big leadout which may switch focus, instead to help him. Initially he had a free role in the first sprint of the race whilst the team would support Gerben Thijssen; but as was seen all of the big leadouts had some sort of difficulty or issue in the finale; and instead we have seen all unexpected sprinters fighting for victory. The likes of Alpecin-Deceuninck, Astana Qazaqstan Team and Team Jayco AlUla were not able to bring their sprinters to the ideal position in Torino.
Girmay believes that having two different sprinters enhances Intermarché's chances of succeeding in what is expected to be another very fest and chaotic sprint, this time on French roads. “It is excellent to have two cards to play. It doesn’t always work, but sometimes it does, as we saw on Monday," he adds. "In any case, we will do our best: it doesn’t matter who wins, we have to try to do it, this time too”.
