Biniam Girmay is eyeing a return to the peloton. The Eritrean superstar has came out an one of the most popular riders over the last few months, and after his unexpected abandon at the Giro d'Italia he is looking to his enxt goals.
After winning stage 11 at the Giro d'Italia,
Girmay was hit in the eye by the champagne cork in the podium ceremonies. He was taken to the hospital, and the morning after
Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux announced his departure from what was an incredibly successful start to the race. In the meantime, Jan Hirt has won stage 16, further enhancing the Belgian team's performance.
On Instagram, he has given an update on his recovery: “Hello everyone. I am doing better but I am not yet able to jump on the bike. But fortunately, I am happy that I will not have any after-effects. I would like to thank the doctors for the good advice and my team for the support," he said.
Girmay added that he will be able to resume training soon. “I hope to be able to race soon and resume my race program after some rest at home in Asmara as scheduled. Now, I hope my team will have more success in the Giro. See you soon," he said.
His initial plan was to ride the Brussels Cycling Classic and the Ronde van Limburg, however that's currently being put to question as he is recovering at home in Asmara, Eritrea. He will have a heavy second half of the season, but will undergo a light calendar for the time being.
