"And then crashes like this happen..." - Nils Politt sees obvious explanation for Dwars Door Vlaanderen crash that left Wout van Aert with a broken collarbone

Dwars Door Vlaanderen 2024 took a dramatic twist mid-way through the race on Wednesday as a mass crash saw many of the pre-race favourites crash out hard. Nils Politt was right in the thick of things but thankfully managed to narrowly avoid disaster.

The likes of Biniam Girmay, Mads Pedersen, Wout van Aert and Jasper Stuyven were all casualties of the incident, with the latter two even suffering broken collarbones. “I can pat myself three times on the helmet for not falling,” said Politt post-race, in an interview with Radsport-news-com. "It happened right next to me. That didn't sound good."

Politt does however, feel he knows why and how the crash took place. "We're coming down there at 80 km/h and everyone knows that afterwards we're going into a street that's only wide for one car," the German of UAE Team Emirates explains "Everyone wanted to be in front and had to be, because it quickly went uphill again on the Kanarieberg. But unfortunately that is also one of the classics."

"We had already ramped up pretty quickly before and everyone was at their limit and yet everyone wants to be at the front again. And then crashes like this happen," Politt concludes. Notably, the 30-year-old managed to finish 12th in the end, as Matteo Jorgenson took the victory.
