Dwars Door Vlaanderen 2024 has taken a turn and not for the better as many of the pre-race favourites have been involved in a very serious, mass crash in the peloton.
Among others, Wout van Aert, Mads Pedersen, Jasper Stuyven and Biniam Girmay have hit the deck and incredibly hard as well with riders spotted by the TV cameras crying at the roadside and holding collarbones with van Aert's Team Visma | Lease a Bike jersey visibly ripped to shreds and the Belgian superstar already showing some considerable road burns on his shoulders before leaving the race on a stretcher into the ambulance.
This crash has completely changed the course of the race as the second string of riders now see themselves amongst the favourites. How will things pan out? Only time will tell.

That was a terrible crash to witness. Hopefully Wout and the others will heal and recover quickly.

Was Benoot or Jorgenson holding his head at the front after realising what just happened? Hope they find strength in it for dedicating a victory to what will be a very hurt WVA. Not sure anyone from another team would relish having won in such circumstances.

Difficult to see clearly with the zoom included in the image but somehow it seems WVA (central in around 3rd or 4th place) riding perfectly straight suddenly went down like a sack of potatoes with his wheels immediately moving up, it’s as if the bike crumbled beneath him, very unusual way to fall, not at all like when you get hit or hooked from the side and first start to sway before leaning over.
