Alto Colorado queen stage "will be a test, but more to see how I feel" for Remco Evenepoel

The Vuelta a San Juan will have it's queen stage today at the Alto Colorado where the overall classification should be decided. Remco Evenepoel feels little pressure to perform, but will be testing his legs in his first big challenge of the season.

"I'm happy with the first signals I'm getting and feeling right now. It's encouraging for the months to come," Evenepoel told Het Nieuwsblad. "I've got a lot of volume so far, so it's laid a solid foundation for my season. next week, when I'm back in Calpe, maybe it will be a bit more intensive."

The Soudal - Quick-Step rider has so far been helping Fabio Jakobsen in the hunt for stage wins, and has stayed in the same time as the overall classification contenders over the opening stages. The heat has been the main issue, and the wind has at times been felt too, but all of the GC contenders remain in the battle.

"I still have to do it if I want to reach the same level on the Giro as last year on the Vuelta. But I still have three months left. I start my season without pressure in terms of results," the Belgian says.

A 21.1 kilometer climb at a constant 5.4% average will be a climb that suits his attributes quite well, however simultaneously the high altitude will make it a tough day, specially when competing with Colombian climbers such as Miguel Ángel López, Sergio Higuita, Daniel Martínez and who knows, Egan Bernal.

"Of course it will be a test, but more to see how I feel, what level I am reaching at this stage of the season and what I still have to work, especially against the Colombian riders who trained at high altitude all winter and are still good at the start of the season. They are undeniably advantaged," he concluded.
