Breakaway survives on stage 2 of Tour de Romandie! Thibau Nys takes stunning sprint win in first mountain finish

The breakaway managed to just hold off the peloton on stage 2 of the Tour de Romandie. Thibau Nys of Lidl-Trek was caught inside the final kilometer but managed to take the win on the race's first summit finish. His first win of the season.
The breakaway of the day was built by Nys, Andrea Vendrame, Roger Adrià, Nikias Arndt, Sean Flynn, Xandro Meurisse and Xabier Mikel Azparren. The group of seven didn't seem to initially threaten the peloton much, but towards the end of the stage it became apparent that this was not the case.
In the peloton Team Jayco AlUla and INEOS Grenaiders looked to make the race hard in the final ascent, but the distance just didn't allow for major differences. Simon Yates attacked with 3 kilometers to go but with a few riders following. Luke Plapp made a move shortly after which proved successful.
In the front group Vendrame attacked shortly before and together with Nys, built a gap over the rest. Plapp bridged across to the front group but already at the limit. The Australian champion kept a high pace with the duo in the wheel. Vendrame launched his sprint in the first place, but in the explosive uphill finale Nys sprinted to victory.
Nys took the stage win in style and also moves in to the yellow jersey of the race; only in his first days of the season.

That was a nice win by Thibault Nys. It's looking like he'll probably find greater success on the road than he will in cyclocross
Still a good result for UAE, they gets 2 of their riders in top 10, not easy to do, when they are using their B team into Tour of Romandie. They would love getting Ayuso abit higher in the standing, maybe a missed oportunity of getting a podium. Good result overall for UAE nontheless!

- Easy to say, but when you know you were not in the best of form and you don’t know how it’ll be on the day, the only way you can find out what’s possible is by testing what you can do what you can. The fact that he was “only” as good as MP and WVA makes the discussion pretty pointless, all unbiased people are interested in is who is the better when both are in top shape. I for one wouldn’t want to go back to the days of unhealthy gang rivalries such as the DV brothers against Merckx which could devolve into dirty tricks, quite happy everyone now tries to win in his own way.Mistermaumau07-04-2025

- I disagree, the only issue yesterday was Tadej was stronger, he softened them on every berg after the first loop then burned them hard up the Oude Kwaremont/Paterberg. As Adam Blyth suggested in commentary there is NOBODY better at these 4 or 5 minute efforts on these hills. Protract that to next weekend those 4 or 5 minute efforts could be the difference. Yesterday however, MVDP, WVA and Mads left everything on those roads, Tadej was stronger that simple.slappers6607-04-2025
