Remco Evenepoel will want to quickly forget Thursday's Belgian Championship's time trial. The Road World Champion underestimated the wet conditions and slid into the ditch in a slippery corner.
"Maybe I went a little too fast into that corner," Evenepoel told WielerFlits. "I was confident and willing to take risks in the corners. It was actually the only fast corner on the route. We knew that the corner was the most likely to fall. I just went a little over the limit. And yes, then I was lying in the stream. I didn't touch my brakes, I turned the corner well. But hey, that's life, isn't it."
"I was already fifty seconds behind at the first intermediate point. From then on I knew that I was definitely not competing for the win. During the second lap they told me that the podium was still option, that I was getting closer and closer. That indicates that I had good legs today."
Evenepoel will have a chance to turn the tides on Sunday, in the road race. "We have multiple cards to play. It's going to be very spicy. We have to be alert and make sure that no good group rides away without us. If it does come together, we'll have a really good lead-out to drop Tim off."
