2024 Tour de France stage 8 GC Update: Tadej Pogacar heads into much talked about gravel stage with narrow GC lead

Ahead of a day that is sure to greatly increase the stress levels among the favourites for the general classification, stage 8 of the 2024 Tour de France saw a more relaxing day for GC riders as Biniam Girmay took his second stage win of this Grand Tour.

Tadej Pogacar started with the yellow jersey and a lead of 33 seconds over Remco Evenepoel, 2nd, and 1 minute and 15 seconds over Jonas Vingegaard, 3rd and that's how things stayed at the end of the day. After Jonas Abrahamsen led a solo breakaway for 170 kilometres, the Uno-X Mobility rider was caught with 14 km to go by the full peloton, so the stage was finally decided in a sprint. This left Pogacar holding the yellow before the gravel with the same gap over Evenepoel (2nd at 33 seconds) and Vingegaard (3rd at 1 minute and 15 seconds).

Behind, Primoz Roglic remains in 4th position at 1 minute and 36 seconds. Juan Ayuso is the next best in the overall, 5th at 2 minutes and 16 seconds behind Pogacar and narrowly ahead of teammate, Joao Almeida who sits 6th, 1 second behind teammate Ayuso and 2 minutes and 17 seconds behind leader Pogacar,

The rest of the Top 10 is completed by Carlos Rodriguez, 7th at 2 minutes and 31 seconds, and Mikel Landa, 8th at 3 minutes and 35 seconds. Matteo Jorgenson, 9th, 4 minutes and 3 seconds behind the yellow jersey, and Aleksandr Vlasov, 10th, 4 minutes and 36 seconds behind.
