After reaching rock bottom in the Koppenbergcross last week and looking around in despair afterwards, Pim Ronhaar finished fourth the following Sunday at the European Cyclo-Cross Championships in Pontchateau. Ronhaar doesn't understand it anymore either.
The European Championship in soaking wet conditions was tailor-made for Ronhaar. "He doesn't like tactical racing, but just accelerate and end up where you belong," national coach Gerben de Knegt told In de Leiderstrui before the race.
Ronhaar's performance was a boost for the cross-talent, but he does not want to call things too soon. "After Waterloo I also had a good feeling, before it was bad in Overijse. I don't want to get overconfident now and say that I will compete with the best again next week in Dendermonde. Maybe I'll be having a bad day again. But today was super good."
"It is what it is, but it is annoying. We worked hard in the summer to eliminate that inconsistency. But maybe it's just in me," he continues. He looks for explanations as to why he has the one week among the best and a week later not even in the top ten. "I haven't been able to train much after Waterloo, so if I go on a traning camp around December 5 and can train in the sun for two weeks, the basic level will increase. Maybe it's also something mental, I have no idea."
