“It was a bit mediocre actually” - Laurens Sweeck on his underwhelming performance at the World Championships in Tábor

After a difficult season, in which he failed to score any victories, Laurens Sweeck capped it off with an underwhelming performance at the World Championships in Tábor. The Belgian rider finished fourteenth in Sunday’s race, as he got caught up in several mid-field battles throughout the race.

In an interview with WielerFlits after the race, Sweeck gave several reasons for his disappointing season, stating that “It's a bit of everything. First there was that muscle tear, then I suffered a bit with illness, I had corona in December”.

The Crelan-Corendon rider was clearly not able to recover and find form ahead of the World Championships, as he said “you know in advance that this circuit has no secrets, that the legs do the talking. If those aren't good enough, you can't play hide and seek anywhere. The legs are what they are, you get to your place”.

On his race, Sweeck said “I think I would have started in the top ten, but I got stuck there and had to give up a few more places. It was a bit mediocre actually”.

The former UCI World Cup winner still has a few chances to take his first win of the season though, with his next race set to be the International Closing Prize Oostmalle on February 25th. Sweeck is still hopeful that he can salvage something from this season, stating that “it hasn't been what it should have been, but I still hope to make some improvements. Maybe I can still finish the season well”.
