Colombian cyclist Rigoberto Urán, a member of the EF Education EasyPost team, has surprised his fans by revealing in an interview with RCN that he is close to ending his outstanding career in professional cycling. With two podium finishes in the Giro d'Italia and an outstanding second place in the Tour de France, Urán has left an indelible mark in the history of international sport over more than a decade in cycling's elite.
At 36 years old, Urán reflected on his career and the possibility of retiring in the near future: "This year has been a very regular year, no goal has been achieved, but there is always the illusion. We know that there is an age, that I am reaching a cycle that is about to end". It is evident that the rider from Antioquia has been evaluating his future in professional cycling and considering when will be the right time to take a step back.
However, Urán also shared details about what could be his last competition before retiring from cycling for good. "The idea is to come back. We don't know what the season is going to be, whether to be in the Tour [de France], that's for the team to decide, and hopefully in the Olympics (Paris 2024 Olympic Games) which is the last race." This suggests that the Colombian cyclist intends to say goodbye to his sporting career in an event as emblematic as the Olympic Games.
The issue of retirement has been a concern for Urán, who has acknowledged the challenges athletes face when they retire and must adapt to a life outside of competition. "For me, I was worried about what to do when you retire. What happens is that fame is fucked up and a lot of people buy into that stuff. You get used to a lifestyle. So we looked for a way. Go Rigo Go was born. It was born as a hobby, but Michelle (his wife) has always had a very big vision", shared Urán.
