Vuelta a Espana 2024 route revealed - 34 kilometers of time-trials only; Puerto de Ancares, Cuitu Negru and Lagos de Covadonga combination returns

The Vuelta a Espana route for the 2024 season is official! Tonight the race organizers and many other figures have gathered in Madrid for the race presentation, and showcased another brutal edition of La Vuelta.

The race will start, as previously confirmed, in the city of Lisbon in Portugal; and the first three stages will take place within Portuguese territory with a time-trial on stage 1 and two stages suited to the sprinters to follow. The race moves to Spain in stage 4 and immediately hits the mountains with a summit finish at the Pico Villuercas.

It is a route that first moves south and sees finales in cities such as Sevilla, Córdoba and Granada - the latter being the final stage of the first week, including a double ascent of the Alto de Hazallanas. It is a route that features brutal stages in all three weeks and should deliver a lot of spectacle. The second week begins in Galicia with a set of tricky hilly stages. The second week features summit finishes in Manzaneda, Puerto de Ancares and the famous Cuitu Negru. Lagos de Covadonga is then the finale of stage 16 which opens up the final week. These last three summit finishes were used in the 2012 edition which had a spectacular battle between Alberto Contador, Joaquim Rodríguez and Alejandro Valverde.

However the action will not end there. After two hilly and explosive days, stage 19 will have a summit at the Alto de Moncalvillo, and stage 20 will see the riders in the region of Burgos for a day packed with difficult climbs and an ultimate summit finish at Picón Blanco. The race will end in Madrid as traditional but with a time-trial, only 34 kilometers of time-trial on the menu but plenty climbing.
