A British former Olympic cyclist has been arrested on suspicion of rape and indecent assault according to reports in the Mail on Sunday.
The newspaper reports that police have confirmed to them an arrest was made and that a male suspect has now been released on bail whilst a pending investigation into the alleged offences is carried out. The Mail says it cannot reveal the name of the suspect for legal reasons.
According to reports the unnamed man has "worked with some of the biggest names" in the cycling world and had formerly held a "prominent position in professional cycling" prior to his retirement. In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for British Cycling made the following statement.
"Abuse of any kind has no place in sport. We urge anybody with concerns about non-recent or current abuse to report them either directly to the British Cycling safeguarding team by emailing
[email protected]."
