A few months ago, Romain Bardet declared that he would not stay in the peloton for much longer, overwhelmed by the vast superiority of the new generation of riders. The Frenchman affirmed that he was not even close to them when they accelerated uphill.
To make matters worse, he recently crashed out of the Tour de France. And his subsequent statements to L'Equipe make it clear that his patience and desire to continue competing are running out. "Even without falling and completely healthy I couldn't have done much more there," he explained.
"Should I be satisfied to show competitive spirit while being up front? Yes. But winning a stage was impossible," analyzed the DSM leader. "The hardest thing is that I sacrificed months for nothing and on top of that I didn't have fun on the bike," he concluded.
The years go by for everyone, and the youngster who once fought for Tour de France victory now watches as the newer ones leave him stranded in the mountains, perhaps making him take his own medicine. The concrete thing is that Romain's statements are repeated, and everything suggests that his career in the peloton will not last much longer.
