Opening stage of the Vuelta a Andalucía cancelled due to farmers protests

The Vuelta a Andalucía has announced the cancellation of the first stage due to the lack of police to control the race caused by massive protests by local farmers that are taking place in the area. It is still yet to be decided if the rest of the stages will take place or not.

The first stage was to start from Almuñécar and was to end in Cádiar. A few minutes before the cancellation, the organization posted a tweet from the start that did not show any signs cancelling the stage, indicating that this was a rather abrupt decision by the race organisers.

The organisers will announce in due course whether or not the rest of the race will be cancelled due to the protests or if the remaining four stages will go ahead as planned. The second stage is currently set to take place tomorrow between Velez Malaga and Alcaudete.
