Matteo Jorgenson is already looking forward to racing for Jumbo-Visma: "I would rather ride for someone who wins the race than finish sixth or eighth myself"

Matteo Jorgenson clearly cannot wait to start working at Jumbo-Visma in 2024. The 24-year-old American is currently competing in his last races in the Movistar jersey, but in conversation with Het Nieuwsblad he looked ahead to what is to come.

Jorgenson officially became a professional at Movistar in 2020, where he developed into a dangerous stage hijacker and climber in recent years. At the beginning of this year he won the Tour of Oman, but he also impressed in difficult mountain stages at the Tour de France. In the classic spring he finished ninth in the Tour of Flanders this year and fourth in the E3.

Jumbo-Visma's interest was therefore not surprising. Jorgenson recently signed a three-year contract and he can't wait to start his new adventure. "All but two of the WorldTour teams have sent my agent an email. I have spoken to them all personally. I realize that there is criticism because I won't get as many chances at Jumbo-Visma, but I just wanted to join the team where I think I can reach the highest level. I would rather ride for someone who wins the race than finish sixth or eighth myself."

In that respect, Jorgenson already announces that he would like to be a helper. He even spoke to Wout van Aert in the peloton. "I already talked to Wout about it at the back of the peloton during the Tour. I told him that I would love to help him win Roubaix," says Jorgenson.

The American would also like to ride for GC at grand tours: "That would be really cool. I am also sure that I will have opportunities to be the leader in a number of races. Look at Kuss in the Vuelta. If you prove that you have the level, the opportunities will come naturally. Now that we talk about it like this: my boyhood dream has really come true."

Sepp Kuss, the name has been mentioned. Jorgenson's compatriot has been a valued force at Jumbo-Visma for years and is currently wearing the red jersey at the Vuelta. According to Jorgenson, he will keep it until Madrid, he says at Velo. "I have confidence in it and I hope so too. It would be huge for cycling and I believe he can do it. He'll need a really bad day to lose the red, so I think he's in a really good position."
