Living through all the emotions of the decisive stage 20
Giro d'Italia time-trial,
Primoz Roglic's
Jumbo-Visma teammates,
Koen Bouwman and
Sam Oomen admit they feared the worst when the Slovenian suffered a late mechanical.
“You see that bicycle change, then you think 'it can't be right?'. I walked away, I thought: it's over, it's over," an emotional Bouwman revealed in conversation with Eurosport following the dramatic conclusion to the stage. "But it's still Primoz, isn't it? It is unbelievable. Beautiful, beautiful. We knew: this is a time trial where it could be done. It's gorgeous.”
Oomen meanwhile admits he was worried when he saw Roglic's chain slip off at such a potentially important moment of the stage. “It can't be, can it?” Oomen questions. “It turns out that you always have to keep believing in it. It looked steady the whole time trial . He came closer and closer, but in one go… It's one of those moments when the world stops for a moment. Unbelievable. I think it may have been a bit of a tame Giro for many of the spectators, from a distance, but this was a very exciting apotheosis.”
“It's like a madhouse and a rollercoaster. All in one. But it is very, very special,” he concludes.
