Jonathan Castroviejo, who has been a notable presence in the peloton for more than ten years, has recently announced his desire to bring his professional cycling career to a close.
"Physically I'm still feeling good and I still have 2024 left on my contract. My idea is to park the bike there," he told El Maillot. It appears that although he is under contract with
INEOS Grenadiers until the end of this year, an extension has been agreed upon for the next year at least verbally.
Despite his condition being favourable and having the ability to continue for a few more years, his mind is primarily concerned with devoting more time to his family and being at home. "I think the situation at home, my head and the desire to dedicate myself to something else, to have another life, will be more important. My physique is still with me, because I know that I haven't used it too much over the last 20 years. I've done just enough to have a good level whenever I could", he explained.
It's not an unexpected move, especially since Castroviejo is just a couple of weeks away from turning 36. This age seems to be the ideal time for him to conclude this phase of his life. He has been a crucial member of the team, particularly in terms of supporting top cyclists. He has ten victories to his credit, including his latest in 2019, where he was crowned the National Champion of Spain in the Individual Time Trial.
