Jasper Philipsen proves himself fastest sprinter in the world with messy win at Classic Brugge-De Panne

For the second year running, Jasper Philipsen has taken victory at Classic Brugge-De Panne, proving himself the fastest sprinter in the peloton and backing up his Milano-Sanremo victory in style.

Traditionally a race for the sprinters, three men decided to try and thwart the plans of the fast men via the breakaway, Luca De Meester, Victor Vercouillie and Thomas Gachignard.

Although stretched out towards seven minutes at one point, the peloton gradually wound things up and with 30km to go, just one minute separated the two groups.

Despite a few crashes as the battle for positioning became more and more important, the peloton finally completed the catch with around 10km to go.

In a frantic few kilometres, the run was incredibly messy with no team able to take full control.

Nevertheless, a bunch sprint was the decider despite a crash in the final kilometre. Opening the sprint was Tim Merlier but despite powerful efforts from him and Danny van Poppel, Jasper Philipsen once again proved himself the premier sprinter in the peloton.
