The big three's absence from Dwars door Vlaanderen gives a chance for the other riders to shine, making it an essential event leading up to the Tour of Flanders.
"Many riders realise that they have an opportunity to put a classic on their honors list", José De Cauwer told Sporza. He continues, "Everyone is now focused on the Tour of Flanders. But how many teams can go to the Tour with the ambition to win? That is a maximum of 5 to 6 teams.”

His recommendation to teams is to field their strongest riders and give it their all. “I would also line up my strongest team in Dwars door Vlaanderen. The absence of the Big Three increases the chances of many riders. In Waregem, those riders all get the chance to win their Tour of Flanders."
Teams face a dilemma of either backing their best riders on Sunday, with little probability of success or choosing to field them on Wednesday, where the chances of achieving a podium finish are higher. "Becoming 5th in the Ronde is perhaps more difficult than winning Dwars door Vlaanderen. But such a victory is on your honors list. And just try to win a race. Winning is winning. And in cycling, it's still about winning."
