He’s been close at this race already but it’s finally top honors for @MilanJonathan_ at #TirrenoAdriatico 👏💪🥳 What a finale to today’s stage 😮💨 HUGE congratulations to Johnny and the whole team 👊🫶
After he followed up strong performances at Opening Weekend with a runner-up finish at Strade Bianche behind Tadej Pogačar, Toms Skujins is now looking ahead to rest of his Classics campaign and what he might be able to achieve this season.
On his early season form, Skujins said in an interview with Cyclingnews at Tirreno-Adriatico that “I know the legs are there. I know that this winter has been super good, so now it's just using those opportunities that I get”.
Despite his strong form in the three one-day races that he has raced this season, Skujins was not even supposed to be racing in the Classics this season, as he stated that “I mean definitely Omloop already changed my program a little bit. I was not planning on going back to Belgium for the Cobbled Classics. But now we see that maybe it's worth it for me to go to the hillier ones, so I'll go back”.
However, he is realistic about his role in the team and is aware of his position alongside the likes of Mads Pedersen, as he said “when I go back to Belgium we have the ex-world champ, we have a bit of a different field there and it’s a different style of race as well, so I'll be more in support there”.
After Tirreno-Adriatico, Skujins is currently scheduled to only be riding Dwars door Vlaanderen at the end of March, but with Lidl-Trek’s provisional lineups for many of the Classics yet to be revealed, it is likely that we will see him feature in several races this Spring.
