Elisa Longo Borghini is forced to take a break from cycling. The Italian champion has to deal with an infection in her thigh, which means that she now has to start a course of antibiotics. Participation in the World Cycling Championships in Glasgow is therefore not an option.
"Elisa suffers from a deep skin infection in the upper part of her left thigh. It is a serious infectious process that should not be underestimated in any way," reads the team statement.
"These symptoms cause pain and fever that still keep her in bed at home, which is why an intensive course of antibiotics has become necessary, which will last at least a week from today," said lead physician Gaetano Daniele. "In the best case scenario, if the antibiotic treatment produces the desired results, Elisa should be able to ride without intensity again in about ten days. Then we can start talking about a return to the competition."
"Mentally it is a heavy blow, which unfortunately comes in an already difficult season. The fact that I had to come home from the Tour was a huge disappointment. Quitting at this point in the season was the last thing I wanted, but the priority has to be my health. I focus on healing and recovery at my best. Giving up the World Championship is painful, but it was also the only choice I had."
