There is concern that
Giulio Ciccone will be unable to ride the final monument of the season at
Il Lombardia after the Italian crashed during the recent
Tre Valli Varesine crash.
Ciccone's American team, Lidl Trek, made the announcement via social media. "Medical checks following Ciccone’s crash at Tre Valli Varesine have ruled out any fractures. Giulio underwent a total-body CT scan that didn’t show any evidence of bone fracture or other serious injury. However, due to the severe contusion suffered, Cicco continues to experience severe pain in the pelvic and lumbar area. He was discharged from hospital."
Currently, the team can say little about his participation in the Il Lombardia, a race scheduled for next Saturday. "Further assessment of his condition and a decision on his participation at Il Lombardia will be made in the coming days," said the statement.
Ciccone showed his good form last Saturday at the Giro dell'Emilia. The 28-year-old Italian climber finished eighth in this Italian semi-classic. Ciccone has already taken part in the Il Lombardia several times and to find his best result, we have to go back to the corona year of 2020: the Italian racer then finished in an excellent fifth place in the Tre Valle Varesine.
