Trek - Segafredo rider Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier has suffered several injuries on a crash he has suffered on the final stage of the
Volta a Catalunya and has been hospitalized. However, he has in the meantime been stabilized according to a team's press release.
“Examinations revealed that Amanuel suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash. Comprehensive scans showed that he has a severe contusion of the right hemithorax and abdomen, including damage to multiple organs, as well as rib and vertebrae fractures," team physician Dr. Manuel Rodrìguez Alonso said.
After being active in the final circuit within Barcelona, Ghebreigzabhier crashed on the fast and technical descent off the Montjuic. Although no footage of the crash emerged explaining how the accident happen, the race broadcast has informed of the crash: “Amanuel is currently in a stable condition and undergoing conservative treatment by the medical team in Barcelona. He will remain in hospital as doctors continue to observe his evolving condition over the next few days to determine whether surgery will be required."
The Eritrean had a strong start to the season, finishing sixth in the queen stage of the Tour de la Provence and later on completing the Tour des Alpes Maritimes et du Var in sixth place overall. He was on track to finish arount the Top10 in Spain at the time of the crash.
“It will take several months for Amanuel to resume racing but fortunately, up until now, there has not been any irreversible damage," Dr. Alonso concluded.
