CONFIRMED: Route changes to Il Lombardia course due to heavy rainfall 24 hours before the race

It was rumoured yesterday and confirmed today. Route changes have been put in place at Il Lombardia due to the heavy rainfall this week. This will affect the course, albeit not big consequences as the race found similar roads to finish the course on.

On the descent of the Passo di Ganda there was a landslide this week and the road featured cracks that posed a clear and obvious safety issue. Quickly, race organizers decided to remove the climb from the course but add in a very similar ascent in Selvino which will be 10.5 kilometers at 5.5%, still in the early kilometers of the race.

Whilst most of the route remains intact, the finish line will be placed in a different location. Initially, it was in an avenue by Lake Como but due to the fears of possible flooding, the organizers have introduced a corner with only a few hundred meters to go, and placed the finish line a few hundred meters away from the lake to prevent this from becoming a big issue.

Overall the route remains very similar and it should not change the riders that will be battling for victory this Saturday in what is the final monument of the season. Tadej Pogacar enters as the defending champion and absolute favourite for a fourth consecutive win.
