Alongside the awaited yellow-card system, UCI will also test racing without earphones in August

The International Cycling Union is pleased with some of the safety measures it introduced a month ago and which are being tested during this Tour de France.

The UCI further confirmed in a press release that it will further test and fine-tune the measures in the coming months and also announced that the ban on wearing earphones in racing during three stages in the Tour of Poland (12 to 18 August) and in the Vuelta a Burgos, riders will not be allowed to use earphones. Furthermore the long-awaited yellow card system will soon be introduced in racing.

The introduction of yellow cards in racing will be tested at UCI WorldTour level and in Women's WorldTour races from 1 August to 31 December this year. During this five-month trial phase, the yellow cards will translate into sanctions that will be communicated in the race communiqué. The cards will not physically exist, unlike in football, and will have no consequences for participation in future events.

From 1 January, when the trial period officially ends, riders can be sanctioned after receiving one or more yellow cards, possibly resulting in suspension. Riders can be punished with a yellow card from the turn of the year for, among other things, endangering other riders and the safety of the event.
