Ben O'Connor was hit with a fine after a communication mishap at the Vuelta a Espana sent him down the mountain instead of to the podium. After realising the error, O'Connor had to be rushed back up the 15km climb, arriving visibly frustrated to the podium, instead of a warm bath at the hotel.
"I was told to descend down to the bottom, and then I was told actually had to come back up," a shivering O'Connor told Eurosport. "That was a bit frustrating to be honest. I have the red jersey for tomorrow so I'll try and soak it up and enjoy it as much as I can because I'm not sure it will last that long." Adding insult to injury, O'Connor was fined 1,000 CHF for failing to appear at the ceremony within 10 minutes of the stage finish.
Over on The Breakaway show ahead of Wednesday's Stage 17, commentator Adam Blythe said: "How hard is it for the organisers to go 'you're in red, you need to wait around for the podium'?"
"And here's where the podium is," laughs the presenter Orla Chennaoui. "Usually they are guided, chaperoned from the finish right to the podium because they go through doping control, then they are taken to the podium. So how did he manage to wander off without anyone keeping tabs on him?!" Blythe responds: "He's like Houdini. It is shambolic."
