Domenico Pozzovivo may have started his first Grand Tour all the way back in 2005 but the now 40-year-old Italian is still as determined as ever whilst he looks to secure a contract for the 2023 season.
Currently training hard at a camp on Mount Etna, Pozzovivo has given himself a deadline of mid-February to find himself a team for the upcoming season because as he puts it, "otherwise it would be difficult to participate in the Giro at a high level, also given the possible changes of equipment and the planning of training periods."
"I hope to have more clarity soon. Who knows, this week may be the good week,” Pozzovivo explains, refusing to rule out a return to his most recent employer, Intermarche-Circus-Wanty. "Maybe, why not, it will even be Intermarché. I felt good there and they started the season with good results. And if you look at riders with my profile, they now only have Louis Meintjes."
And the experienced Italian who can boast eight Grand Tour top 10 overall finishes on his palmares has even further than just the upcoming campaign on his mind. Refusing to rule out returning in 2024 if he can secure a team for the upcoming season. If not? Then "I will stop after 2023," he declares.
